At the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, the Association Opens a Dialogue on Who Is Raising Our Children: The Family or the Algorithm?

As part of its participation in the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, the Association held a panel discussion titled:

“Who Is Raising Our Children Today… the Family or the Algorithm?”
Law and Society in the Age of Social Media and Artificial Intelligence

The session shed light on one of the most pressing issues arising from rapid technological transformation: the growing influence of social media and artificial intelligence on children’s lives, and the legal, social, and educational challenges that accompany this influence and affect both the family and society.

The discussion explored the transformations brought about by the digital environment to parenting and communication within the family, as well as the extent to which digital content and algorithms influence children’s thoughts, behaviours, and interests. It also examined the role families can play in navigating this rapidly changing environment.

The session further addressed the role of law in keeping pace with rapid developments in technology, artificial intelligence, and social media, as well as the questions these developments raise concerning child protection, privacy, accountability, and the safe and responsible use of modern technologies.

The session was moderated by Lawyer and Legal Consultant Hassan Matar Al Riaimi, with the participation of Lawyer Dr. Khalid Ali Al Dhahani. The discussion featured a rich and engaging exchange addressing the legal, social, and educational dimensions of the emerging digital environment, as well as ways to strengthen the role of families and society in protecting children and empowering them to engage with modern technologies consciously and responsibly.

The session highlighted the importance of striking a balance between benefiting from the opportunities offered by technology and addressing the challenges and risks associated with its uninformed use. It emphasised that protecting children in the digital age is a shared responsibility that requires the combined efforts of families, educational and community institutions, and the legal system.

The Association’s participation in the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair reflects its commitment to maintaining an active presence in cultural and community events, contributing to the promotion of legal awareness, and creating spaces for dialogue on contemporary issues affecting families and society. It also underscores the Association’s commitment to raising awareness of the transformations brought about by the digital age and supporting the development of a more informed society capable of keeping pace with rapid technological advancements.
